Aphasia deserves long-term planning and management as it has a profound impact on the lives of all those affected—those living with aphasia, as well as families, friends, colleagues, and the community at large. In fact, it is difficult to find life activities that do not require communication and therefore are not affected by aphasia (Life Participation Approaches to Aphasia [LPAA] Project Group, in press). Adding to the impact of aphasia is the lack of awareness of the disorder within our communities. The word ‘aphasia’ is infrequently used in the media, leading to further isolation of those living with it (Elman, Ogar, & Elman, 1999). And, perhaps because communication is so embedded in our daily lives, the general public seems to have great difficulty imagining what it is like to have a reduction in the ability to speak, understand, read, or write.
