What is complementary and alternative medicine? Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a set of medical treatments and practices that are considered separate from conventional “Western” (allopathic) medicine. They can be used in conjunction with traditional medicine (complementary) or instead of traditional medicine (alternative). The medical treatments can include different approaches and modalities of treatment, ranging from whole system approaches (Chinese or Ayurvedic medicine) to mind-body approaches (meditation, prayer) to biologically-based practices (herbs and nutrition; National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine). Additionally, CAM is used interchangeably with the term integrative medicine, which reflects a move towards combining all modalities of treatment that are effective.
