In the year 2000, the first order of business for the Division 2 Research Committee was to formalize its purposes, chart a plan, and move to action to support research in the field of neurological communication disorders. As part of its Three-Year Strategic Plan (2001–2003), the committee defined its Primary Purposes as follows:
  1. To recruit and mentor students and new investigators by facilitating and targeting research opportunities in academic programs and work settings; and

  2. To foster applied research and research-oriented practice in the areas of neurophysiology and neurologic speech, language, and cognitive processes and disorders
