The human brain is an enormously complex and extremely demanding organ. In order to execute its countless functions, it relies on the constant supply of oxygen and glucose that are provided in the blood that travels through it. Because of the critical importance of blood flow for cerebral function, the ability to understand and assess the blood supply to the brain has been an important medical development. This article will discuss currently available tools for studying cerebral vasculature, and their roles in:
  1. Assessing blood supply to the brain,

  2. Investigating the functions of various portions of the brain,

  3. Preventing neurological illness and subsequent disability, and

  4. Treating these illnesses when they do occur.
